Understand the firefighter aptitude testing process and available preparation options.
A modern digital experience for aspiring firefighters preparing for aptitude and cognitive assessments.
We redesigned the platform to make the preparation journey clearer and easier to trust, and to turn the free test into a stronger path toward paid training.
A Heavens Web Solutions website design & development project.
Firefighter Aptitude Test (firefighteraptitudetest.com.au) helps Australian firefighter candidates prepare for the aptitude and cognitive assessments used in recruitment. The project centered on turning a content-heavy training website into a clearer, conversion-focused preparation journey - one that builds trust, demonstrates value quickly and guides each candidate toward the right level of preparation.
The site already had good material - practice tests, coaching, real expertise behind both - but it read like a content-heavy training site rather than something built to move a visitor forward. There was no clear next step after the free test, and it wasn't obvious how the free test, the training courses and the personal coaching related to each other.
The redesign builds the whole experience around one path: discover the process, try the free test, see how you did, practice the weak spots, then step up to training or coaching if you need it. We backed that up with a clearer visual design, a simpler information structure, and a more deliberate route from the free test to paid training.
Candidates preparing for firefighter recruitment are often applying under time pressure, alongside work or study, and are not necessarily confident with aptitude-style testing. Many are researching on a phone, comparing their options, and deciding whether this is a process they can trust with their preparation. The experience needed to build that trust quickly, explain unfamiliar test formats in plain language, and make the first step - the free test - feel low-risk and worth taking.
The result is a site that reads like a real learning platform instead of a static brochure - built to help candidates prepare with more confidence, and to turn more of that free-test traffic into paying students.

Take the free aptitude practice test.

Use structured training and expert guidance.
Build confidence before taking the actual recruitment assessment.
The UX strategy treated the free test as the centerpiece of the experience rather than one feature among many - the moment most likely to turn a visitor into an engaged candidate. Around it, the site needed a clear information architecture across testing, practice, training and coaching, a visual language that felt like a professional learning platform rather than a static brochure site, and a conversion path that respected where a candidate actually was in their preparation.
A clearer, more encouraging way to take the first step.
A results-dashboard concept that turns a completed test into a clear next step.
Presented here as a UX concept and design opportunity - a personalised results dashboard is not a feature of the current live website.
A no-commitment first step that lets a candidate experience the format and see where they stand.
Structured practice and learning resources for candidates who want to build on their free-test result.
A more complete preparation path for candidates who want deeper coverage and support.
One-on-one expert guidance for candidates who want individual feedback ahead of recruitment day.
Candidate testimonials and success stories, placed where they matter most in the decision.
Visible expert coaching credentials, so candidates know who is guiding their preparation.
Service-specific preparation paths instead of a single generic offering.
Clear, plain-language explanations of what the testing and preparation process actually involves.
The free test is the entry point of the funnel - it lets a candidate experience real value before being asked to commit to a paid program. Each stage after it recommends a natural next step rather than presenting every option at once.
The visual direction aimed for something that reads as professional and modern - a design that feels like a serious learning platform, not a generic emergency-services website.
Strong, confident typography
Dark navy and charcoal tones balanced with clean white content sections
A fire/emergency-inspired accent color used deliberately, not decoratively
Clear cards and CTA buttons
Custom SVG iconography instead of generic stock icons
Generous spacing, closer to a SaaS dashboard than a brochure site
Every section was designed mobile-first and checked across mobile, tablet, laptop and desktop breakpoints - typography stays readable, sections stack naturally, CTAs stay reachable, and the free-test interface remains usable with one hand on a phone.
A clearer path from free test to paid training and coaching, designed to convert more first-time visitors into engaged candidates.
A more trustworthy first impression for candidates comparing their preparation options.
A test-taking experience built to reduce drop-off before completion.
A design system that can grow with new question types, categories or coaching offerings.
Expected outcomes based on the redesign strategy — not measured results from the live website.
